All About Fiberglass Swimming Pools

In recent years, there has been a boom in the swimming pool industry when it comes to building with a fiberglass frame. After all, this is a material that is known for its strength, durability, and longevity. This type of pool variety is designed to be used either partially in the ground (up to 18 inches) or completely in the ground. If a homeowner is interested in having a fully on-ground fiberglass pool installed, it will need extensive backfill material used to keep it supported and in place.

Reasons Why Homeowners Want This Type of Pool Installed

1. They think it will be less expensive. Just because a pool is built partially out of the ground, it doesn't mean that you will be saving any money. The only savings you will receive will be in the form of less backfill material being used if the pool is built partially in the ground or completely in the ground. However, these savings are typically offset by the fact that a framed deck will need to be added. The cost of a deck will depend on what material it is made out of (i.e. wood or concrete), and how much excavation is going to be required.

2. The homeowner wants their pool to be built about the flood plain in their yard. When you have a fiberglass pool elevated above the ground, it can naturally help to prevent flooding into the pool if it is installed in a low-lying area of the lawn. Generally speaking, to prevent this problem entirely, it will just be best to install the pool in an area that isn't prone to flooding. This will prevent a lot of unnecessary damage and headaches further on down the road.

3. The homeowner wants to have a level pool deck coming off of a higher level on the home. If you want the pool to be above 18 inches on the ground so that it can be attached to a deck or patio that you have coming off of the second story of your home, then it must be custom-built from the manufacturer, and it also must be supported by an additional retaining wall.

4. The pool is going to be built on a hillside and the homeowner wants the hill to be left exposed on the side. This is a great idea if the pool is no more than 18 inches above the ground. If it is any higher than this or lower than this, there can be issues with erosion of the backfill soil or of the hill itself over time.

Above Ground Pools vs In-Ground Pools

Sure, the weather outside right now isn't making you think about taking a dip in a brand new pool, but once the dog days of summer get here, you and the family are going to want a place to cool off. What better way to do so than from the comfort of your own backyard with a swimming pool?

Ambassador Pools is a leading above ground pool provider in the New England area, including in Massachusetts where they are headquartered. We wanted to give you a few points to think about when it comes to making a pool purchase. Should you go with in-ground or above ground? What is the best value? What makes the most sense for your family's needs? Read on to learn more.

COST

This is likely the first thing that you want to know about. How much is it going to cost? Generally speaking, an in-ground pool, regardless of whether it is vinyl, concrete, or fiberglass is going to cost around $30-70,000. This is a wide range, definitely, but it is a true estimate of how much the job is going to cost you.

You may have seen popular TV commercials or kits sold at your local home improvement store that say that you can have an in-ground pool installed for less than $15,000. This is nowhere close to being accurate. Sure, maybe the cost of labor will be this much, but this total does not include: the shell of the pool, the excavation and ground leveling work that will be needed, the pool deck that will need to be added around the water, the accessories you want, lighting, electrical hookup, and the fence that will be required around the pool if you live in an area where it's in the city code.

When purchasing an above ground pool, the costs are much less. You can get the entire pool set up, pool deck and accessories included, for MUCH less than $30,000! This is good news for any homeowner working with a budget, which let's face it, that's all of us! Also, when you get an above ground swimming pool installed, you won't need to worry about getting a special fence installed, and you won't have to pay any yearly taxes on it as is the case with the in-ground variety.

MAINTENANCE

When comparing the two types of pools, in-ground pools require a lot of chemicals to be sure that the water stays clean and healthy for your family to swim in. Also, if there is a crack in the walls or floor of the pool, it can be difficult (and expensive) to have repaired, especially if the shell is made from concrete. With an above ground pool from Ambassador Pools, you get a practically maintenance-free pool. That is just how they are designed! It is recommended that you make sure that the filter is kept clean, and be sure that you also skim across the top of the water to remove any leaves, twigs, seed pods, or so on which may have gotten into the water between uses.

SIZE

Both types of pools are available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. However, with above ground pools from us, you have the ability to get a versatile rectangular pool installed which will fit perfectly in the space allotted for it in your backyard. These pools are great for swimming laps and getting your exercise. They are also perfect for all types of water sports and games, including water volleyball.

LONGEVITY

Typically speaking, the average above ground pool will last for around 15 years with proper care and upkeep. The liner in the pool will last for about 5-9 years before it is going to need to be replaced. An in-ground pool's lifespan will vary depending on what type of material the shell is made out of. For most fiberglass pools, they should last for about 20 years. Vinyl pools will last for about that long, as well, but their liners will need to be replaced often. And concrete pools will last for a long time, but they are the most difficult to maintain because they can easily crack and chip.

CONCLUSION

As you can easily see, an above ground pool is a great choice if you are a family in New England wanting to get a swimming pool for your family for the upcoming spring and summer months. For more information, or to schedule a consultation in your home, please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-798-6039. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Creating Your Own Backyard Oasis

While many people probably aren't thinking about cooling off with these chilly temperatures and snowfall totals. However, there is no better time than now to start thinking about next spring and summer and how you can turn your backyard into a hot spot - not literally, of course!

Adding an above ground pool to your backyard is a great way to keep cool during those scorching hot summer days. Also, it's a great way to get exercise and fresh air. It will also keep your kids entertained when they are out of school on vacation, and this will certainly keep them out of your hair and keep you from hearing, "We're bored!" numerous times a day, everyday.

Pool Styles and Designs

So, what pool styles and designs are available to you? When you choose to use Ambassador Pools as your pool installer, you have many different options. We work with what is known as an above ground pool. This means that the pool isn't installed in the ground, and you won't have to wait around for weeks or months for the project to be finished! Another great benefit of having an on-ground pool installed versus an inground one is that you won't have to pay any special taxes on your above ground style - and you won't have to get a special fence installed around it, unless of course, you want to have one installed.

Above Ground Pool Cost

It is MUCH more affordable to get an above ground pool installed. An inground style could cost upwards of $60,000 when all is said and done. So, needless to say, it is going to cost you A LOT less to get this style installed at your home! We are known for being affordable, and our pools are even maintenance-free!

The cost of labor is included in the price of your pool, and typically speaking, an above ground pool can be installed in just a few days.

How Much Do Above Ground Swimming Pools Cost for Massachusetts Homeowners?

One of the very first things that comes to mind when MA homeowners are considering buying a pool is,"how much is it going to cost?" We are a budget-conscious society these days, and we want to be sure that we are getting the best bang for our buck. There are many articles out there on the Web that will give EXACT numbers as far as cost as going to go, but we feel that this is inappropriate and there is no way it can be accurate.

For example, we sell different-sized swimming pools. The amount of labor needed to get your specific model is going to vary based on what the lawn is like - i.e., is any sloping or terrain work going to be required? Also, we offer a variety of accessories and add-ons, including pool decks that are not often included in the price of the above ground pool itself. This is why we feel that your best bet for getting an ACCURATE estimate is to call us for a consultation. The only thing that we can say for sure is that the price is going to be far less than having an inground pool installed! It is also going to take much less time to get one of our on-ground pools set up.

So, if you are thinking about getting an above ground pool installed in your MA home for your family to enjoy next summer, don't go by the pricing you see on the Web alone. Also, don't count on the price of the pool "kits" at the store to be anywhere near what the real thing is going to cost. Again, if you want a real and precise estimate for the cost of the pool as well as for the labor that is going to be required for the installation, you are going to need to give us a call for an estimate and consultation. Our number is 1-800-798-6039.

We service all of MA, including: Worcester, Springfield, Lowell, Cambridge, New Bedford, Brockton, Quincy, Lynn, Fall River, and Newton.

It may be winter, but there is no better time than now to start planning for next spring and summer! Get your above ground pool plans in the works now so that you and your family can be ready to enjoy the cool waters when the temps get hot outside!

Winterizing Your Above Ground Pool

Winterizing Your Above Ground Pool

The temperatures are dropping, holiday decorations are going up, and some locations in the area have already reported snow this season. Now is the perfect time to winterize your above ground pool to prevent costly damage during the next few months when you won't be using it.

Properly winterizing your pool will help to prevent damage to the pool itself, as well as to the equipment used to keep it clean, including the filter and pump.

Follow the steps below to winterize your pool:

1. Drain water from the pool, filter, and pump - never completely drain out ALL of the water - you should leave about 1 foot of water in the base of the pool.
2. Place a plug in the return hole.
3. Remove hoses.
4. Add algaecide.
5. Install a cover and routinely check it each week to be sure that there isn't rain water, ice, or snow building up on top of it.

Closing the Pool for the Season

When closing the pool, you will need to first drain the water (to about 1 foot in height) and then remove the hose clamps. This can typically be done with a 5/16 socket on a cordless drill, or a medium flat head screwdriver may work for you, as well. To remove the pump plug, you may need a pair of pliers or any of the above tools.

Next, you will need to thoroughly clean the inside and outside of the pool. Be sure that you remove any build-up of algae from the sides. Leaving this sit all winter long is going to cause a lot of damage, and you may need to replace parts next spring when you go to open your pool again. During this time, you should also check for tears in the pool liner that will need to be taken care of.

Winterizing Above Ground Pool Filters

You will also need to winterize your filter. If you have a sand filter, it's the easiest to deal with. Pull the drain plug and place the multi-way position valve between the two settings. If you have an earth or cartridge filter, they will need to be taken apart and cleaned. When putting the filter back together, be sure to moisten the o-rings.

Pool Cover

You will need to make sure that you have a solid cover in place to prevent dirt and debris from getting inside during the off-season. Once your cover is in place, be sure to secure it to the pool with cables through the eyelets. You should also get a cover for the pump.

If you have any questions about winterizing your above ground pool this season, please give us a call at 800-798-6039 and we will be more than happy to address any questions or concerns that you may have.

Scale Deposits in Your Center Barnstead Above Ground Pool

An unincorporated community that’s part of the town of Barnstead in Belknap County, New Hanpshire, Center Barnstead is the largest of several villages in the town.

Though the state of New Hampshire has a changeable climate, meaning there are wide variations in seasonal temperatures, warm weather is not that common. But when it does occur, locals take the opportunity to cool off in a pool.

But while hot weather is not as common, many still own their own above ground pools in the area, albeit with a heater installed. No surprise since swimming is a good overall form of exercise.

For pool owners, have you ever had scale deposits appear, but have no idea what they are and how to deal with it?

For starters, scale deposits are usually found as white, gray, or brownish chalky deposits that manifest on the pool walls and fixtures. These occur due to unbalanced water, whether it is because of high pH, high TA, high calcium hardness, or a combination of two of more.

To deal with these scale deposits, take a sample of your pool water and bring it to Ambassador Pools for a proper analysis. Once the source has been determined, Ambassador Pools will help balance your water, as well as recommend the proper chemicals to use.

The next time you have scale deposits, call Ambassador Pools right away for fast and reliable above ground pool support!

Eye and Skin Irritation in Your Above Ground Pool? – York Harbor, ME

A census-designated place in York County, Maine, York Harbor has a population of about 3,000 and is known for its resort architecture. A summer colony, it is also part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area.

As a summer colony, swimming is a popular pastime here. However, many locals prefer to swim in the privacy of their own homes, thus prompting many of them to purchase their own above ground pools.

Above ground pools are more affordable and easier to maintain than inground pools, which explains its popularity. But like any other pool, it has its own share of problems.

Every once in a while, have you ever encountered getting irritated skin and eyes while swimming? Despite what many people think, the cause for this is not too much chlorine in the pool, but rather, it could be that the pool has too little free available chlorine and an incorrect pH.

To solve this problem and give you a more pleasant swim, there are two simple steps to take:

First, you should check the pH and alkalinity of your pool, and adjust it as needed.

Second, shock the pool using shock treatment chemicals. Once done, re-check the alkalinity and pH and adjust as needed.

That’s it! Oh, one more thing, be sure to keep your chlorine levels between 1 to 4 ppm.

Simple enough? Of course it is. But if ever you need help with the maintenance of your above ground pool, be sure to contact Ambassador Pools. They not only can help you with your problem, but they can also provide you with the chemicals and materials you need for a stress-free pool experience!

Discolored Above Ground Pool Water in York Beach, ME

An unincorporated beach community, York Beach in Maine consists of Long Sand and Short Sands beaches in the Gulf of Maine. The town has a population of about 13,000 though, being a popular summer destination, the number spikes up to 52,000 in the summer months.

Obviously, swimming in the beach to cool off is popular among the locals here, however, the summer months makes it difficult to relax given the number of people around. Thus, locals have been turning to above ground pools to get their daily swim routine while avoiding the crowded beaches.

While above ground pools are growing in popularity due to its affordability and ease of maintenance compared to inground pools, the same pool problems still arise of course. One of these is having colored water.

If you find your above ground pool having colored water, this is most likely caused by dissolved metals or a high organic content. Given that there is no algae present, colored water usually has a clear green/brown/yellow tint to it.

To get your pool back to having sparkling clear water, get a water sample and bring it to Ambassador Pools for a full analysis.

If metals are found to be the cause, a metal control agent can be used to control it. But if a high organic content is detected, you can shock the pool using the proper shock treatment chemicals.

You can ask Ambassador Pools where to find the proper chemicals you need, and they will be glad to assist you.

By the way, before you enter the pool again, be sure that the free chlorine level has returned to between 1 to 4 ppm.

To find out more about proper pool maintenance, be sure to ask Ambassador Pools for help. Aside from providing above ground pools, Ambassador Pools are also experts in above ground pool care.

Does Your Above Ground Pool Have a Strong Chlorine Smell? – York, ME

Lying near the southern tip of the state of Maine, York is a town with a population of about 13,000 and is a well-known summer resort. Home to three full golf courses, four sandy beaches and Mount Agamenticus, many tourists flock to the place to spend summer in style.

While tourists cool off in the sandy beaches, many locals are left to either endure the crowds or stay at home. While socializing in the beach may be fun for some, many prefer taking a swim in private.

Because of this, many locals have their own above ground pools so they can cool off any time without having to jockey for position in a crowded beach. However, sometimes pool owners have to deal with routine pool problems, one of which is a strong chlorine smell.

While chlorine is equated to having a clean pool, ironically, a strong chlorine smell coming from your pool means it doesn’t have enough. The smell comes from chloramines and these are usually formed when the level of free available chlorine is not enough.

To be sure, you can calculate the the free available chlorine and total chlorine to get the measure of unwanted combined chlorine compounds that cause the smell using the following equation:

combined chlorine = total chlorine - free chlorine

If you find that the combined chlorine levels is higher than the free available chlorine, you might need to shock treat your pool or use other pool water sanitizers. You can also use a non-chlorine shock if you want to minimize the use of chlorine.

To learn more about chlorine in your pool, feel free to contact Ambassador Pools. The best provider of above ground pools in the area, Ambassador Pools can also help you with maintenance, as well as offer the proper chemicals you need to keep your above ground pool clean and healthy.

Proper Above Ground Pool Water Balance in West Newfield, ME

A town in York County, Maine, Newfield is home to Willowbrook Museum Village and is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford statistical area.

Because of the hot and humid summers here, many West Newfield residents take a dip whenever the weather gets hot. But since not everyone has the means and time to visit a swimming hole everyday, getting an above ground pool for the home is slowly becoming a popular choice for many.

But owning an above ground pool is not all fun and games. While requiring less maintenance than inground pools, you still need to make sure your pool is working in peak condition. Perhaps the most important is the water, so it’s best to understand proper pool balance, and besides, a balanced pool is more easy to take care of.

Problems can arise when pool water becomes unbalanced, so be sure the total pool water balance is at the ideal levels. Taking into account pH, calcium, and total alkalinity, below are the ideal ranges and the frequency of the tests you should take.

Alkalinity should be tested monthly with an ideal range from 125 to 150 ppm.

Calcium hardness should be tested bi-monthly, and should have an ideal range of 175 to 225 ppm.

While pH should be tested twice a week, and the ideal range should be within 7.2 and 7.6.

By maintaining the correct levels, the bacteria-fighting chemicals in your pool will be at their peak strength; corrosion won’t build up on the pool and its parts; and you will get fewer cases of eye and skin irritations.

If levels are above or below the ideal ranges, be sure to contact Ambassador Pools. Ambassador Pool can help give you advice on what to do while offering the proper chemicals needed to ensure your pool stays balanced.

When Your Wells, ME Above Ground Pool Over-Stabilizes

A popular summer destination, Wells is a town in York County, Maine with a population of about 10,000. It is the third-oldest town in the state, being founded in 1643.

Situated near the sea, residents here have an affinity for the water, preferring to swim to cool off when the weather gets hot. Summers in Wells can become hot and humid, which makes it the time when locals start dusting off their swim wear and head on down to the nearest swimming hole.

But not everyone can visit the nearest swimming hole anytime they want, which makes above ground pools one of the more popular purchases of those who love to swim. While easier to maintain than above ground pools, it still requires some care.

So what should you do when your pool becomes over stabilized?

First, you must understand what over stabilization is. It is the build-up of cynauric acid, and is the result of the extended use of stabilized sanitizers along with stabilized shock products.

What over stabilization does is limit the effectiveness of the chlorine in your pool, thus decreasing its effectiveness in killing germs, bacteria and algae. While small levels of cynauric acid protect chlorine form degradation by sunlight, too much will negate its abilities, and can cause problems.

The recommended levels for cynauric acid in pools are between 40 and 60 ppm.

To learn more about over stabilization, how to handle it, and how to prevent it, be sure to consult Ambassador Pools. Not only is Ambassador Pools the best above ground pool provider in the area, it is also the best place for everything you need when it comes to above ground pools.

Understanding TDS – Waterboro, ME

Waterboro in Maine is a town in York County with a population of about 8,000. Part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddefore metropolitan area, it is was once called Massabesic by Abenaki Indians, which means “the place of much water.”

Summers in the area can be hot and humid, and since many locals love to cool off by swimming, it is still a place of much water, albeit found in above ground pools.

Above ground pools are rising in popularity over its inground counterparts, especially since these are much more easier to maintain. However, while easy, it still needs maintenance and one of the things an above ground pool owner should understand are TDSs or total dissolved solids.

TDS is the amount of dissolved matter in the water and can be cause by several factors; from the chemicals used to adjust pH, the chlorine, water hardness, alkalinity, dust, dirt, and even human waste.

For any pool, the max acceptable level is 1,500 ppm, if the TDS levels reach above this, stains can appear in the pool. It will also render any chemicals used to be less effective, which in turn can make the water cloudy.

If TDS levels become too high, there’s not much any pool owner can do except replace the water. One can drain half the water and replace it, or a pool owner can just outright replace all the water. To help prevent TDS from rising above acceptable levels, regular backwashing should be done.

To learn more about TDS, how to control it, and other general above ground pool maintenance tips, feel free to call or visit Ambassador Pools.

Dealing With Cloudy Water – Springvale, ME

A village in York County, and once a cesus-designated place in Sanford, Springvale in Maine is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan area.

The climate in the area is classified as a humid continental climate, meaning summers can be hot and humid. Because of this, many residents look for various ways to cool themselves under the sun, and one of the more popular is swimming. While not everyone can visit a swimming pool whenever they want, many get their own above ground pools instead.

Above ground pools may be easy to maintain, but every once in awhile, the water can become cloudy. This can be caused by an incorrect pH, incorrect TA, or improper filtration. To fix the cloudy water, make sure your pH and TA levels are in the ideal ranges before you adjust your filtration system.

Once levels are set, be sure the filtration system is smooth and run it for 8 - 12 hours non-stop. If the filter needs backwashing, do so and replace it.

If filter pressure does not normalize after backwashing, the filter might need to be cleaned chemically.

Be sure the pump strainer baskets and skimmer baskets have been emptied, and make sure that the pH and alkalinity are within the ideal range.

You can also shock the pool with appropriate shock tools.

Remember, before you enter the pool, be sure the chlorine levels have dropped between 1 and 4 ppm.

If you need to learn more about maintaining your pool and keeping the water clean, be sure to contact Ambassador Pools.

Calculating Your Above Ground Pool’s Volume – South Berwick, ME

A town in York County, Maine, South Berwick is home to Berwick Academy and has a population of about 7,300. Part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddefor metropolitan area, the town was first settled in 1631 and was known as Kittery Parish.

Summers in Maine can be hot humid, which makes swimming one of the top pastimes locals partake in when the weather gets hot. While trips to swimming holes and the beach can be time-consuming and sometimes stressful, many locals prefer to swim in peace and in private. This makes above ground pools one of the more popular alternatives to staying cool.

But to keep a pool clean and crystal clear, one must learn how to properly maintain it. With the help of chemicals, a pool’s water can be made clean and free from algae and bacteria. However, before one can start mixing chemicals in, pool owners should first be able to calculate their pool’s volume.

First, to calculate pool volume, one should first use measurements in feet.

Now, to know the average depth of the pool, you can use the following formula:

(depth of deepest end) feet + (depth of shallow end) feet = ______ feet / 2 = average depth feet

To calculate the capacity of your pool, the formula differs with each pool shape.

For rectangular or square shaped pools:

length in feet x width in feet x average depth in feet x 7.5 = pool capacity in gallons

For oval pools:

length in feet x max depth in feet x average depth in feet x 5.9 = pool capacity in gallons

Finally, for circular pools:

diameter in feet x diameter in feet x average depth in feet x 5.9 = pool capacity in gallons

While keeping your pool clean is easy, many might not have the time to do it. If so, call Ambassador Pools to help you keep your pool and its water in tip top condition.

Understanding Free Available Chlorine in Your Above Ground Pool – Shapleigh, ME

A town in York County, Maine, Shapleigh (pronounced “SHAP-lee”) was incorporated in 1785 and has a population of about 2,700. Part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area, it is served by state routes 11 and 109.

Above ground pools have slowly gained in popularity in the area, especially since summers can be hot and humid. While easier to maintain than inground pools, owners of above ground pools should still make sure their pool is chlorinated properly. For healthy pool water, a chlorinator must be used to kill bacteria, algae and other organic contaminants.

Understanding free available chlorine, or FAC is a good start. In essence, it is the amount of active chlorinator in the water. The correct amount of FAC in a pool should be between 1.0 and 4.0 ppm. If the amount is less, this can cause algae problems and cause the water to get cloudy, as well as cause rashes.

When the level of chlorine is lower than 1.0 ppm, be sure to add the proper chlorinators or shock treatment until you achieve the proper FAC levels.

When testing for FAC, the ideal frequency is daily, though you can get by checking it once every two weeks.

To learn more about FACs and how to properly maintain your above ground pool, be sure to contact Ambassador Pools for more information.

Above Ground Pool Algae Types in Sanford, ME

A city in York County, Maine, Sanford is the seventh largest municipality in the state with a population of about 21,000. Nestled on the Mousam River, Sanford features many lakes in wooded areas which make it attractive to campers.

While lakes abound in Sanford, when summer comes around, many residents don’t feel like traveling to the woods just to take a swim. This is one of the reasons why many choose to get their own above ground pool.

While easy to maintain, above ground pools are still as susceptible to algae as inground pools. But do you know the types of algae that might infest your pool? Here are the more common types:

Green Algae

Usually floating in the water or forming on the side, green algae takes on a dusty green appearance. If left unattended, this can completely render your pool opaque.

Yellow Algae

With an appearance that’s mustard in color, this is also called mustard algae and usually form on the shady sides of your pool

Black Algae

Also appearing in a blue-green color, this type of algae usually forms in about inch or so sized spots just on the pool’s surface

Proper chlorination is your best defense against algae. However, if they start forming, normal levels won’t be able to control it and the water must be treated with 30 ppm of Free Chlorine.

To learn more about algae types and how to fight them, call Ambassador Pools. Ambassador Pools provide its customers with quality service no matter your above ground pool concern.

Safe Behavior Around Above Ground Pools - Saco, ME

Saco, a city in York County, Maine, is home to Ferry Beach State Park, Funtown Splashtown USA, Thornton Academy, and General Dynamis Armament Systems. A tourist spot in the summer months, Saco is also part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area.

Summers can be hot and humid and while swimming is the most popular way to cool off, the number of tourists turn many locals off, which makes them think of other ways to take a swim. The most popular way is by getting their own above ground pool.

While generally safer than inground pools given its raised profile, there are still general safety rules one should follow around above ground pools. These are:
  • No diving
  • No alcoholic beverages
  • Keep the water clean
  • No swimming after dark
  • No slides of boards
  • No horseplay
  • No standing on ledges
While the list is in no way comprehensive, be sure to err on the side of safety always. Use common sense and remember, there’s no such thing as being overly safe.

For more information on pool safety and above ground pools in general, call Ambassador Pools. Ambassador Pools are your one-stop for everything about above ground pools, from the pools themselves, to chemicals, to maintenance and safety, and everything in-between.

Above Ground Pool Safety Equipment – Parsonsfield, ME

A town in York County, Maine, Parsonsfield is also part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area and has a population of about 1,900. With a topography that’s rough and hilly, and only 1.02 sq miles of its total 59.91 sq miles being water, swimming in Parsonsfield is a luxury.

To beat the lack of swimming holes in the town, many residents are taking matters into their own hands by getting their own above ground pool. While more affordable, practical, and relatively safer than inground pools, owners should still practice due diligence in the maintenance and safety features of their pool.

Here then, are some safety tips above ground pool owners should know:

Use a fence

A fence around a pool may not be crucial, but adding at least a 4-foot tall enclosure around it can greatly improve safety. Be sure that the gates are self-latching and is equipped with permanent locking to help keep wandering toddlers out. Cleaning Your Above Ground Pool – Old Orchard Beach, ME

A census-designated place and town in York County, Maine, Old Orchard Beach is part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford metropolitan statistical area and has a population of about 9,000.

The town has a number of tourist-oriented businesses and its long stretch of beach is  lined with beach homes, condos, motels and more.

Summers in Old Orchard Beach can be hot and humid, and while the beach is a great place to cool off, the number of tourists can cause issues with privacy. This is why many residents have opted to get their own above ground pool to cool off in whenever they want, without having to deal with other people.

While easier to maintain than inground pools, above ground pools still require some TLC. Here is a checklist you can use whenever your above ground pool needs some cleaning:

1. When cleaning the pool, you can use a portable leaf skimmer to hep you
2. Be sure to clean the strainer baskets in the skimmer and pump
3. When cleaning the walls of your pool, the proper way to do so depends of the material. Be sure to consult your pool’s manufacturer
4. Your pool should be vacuumed at least once a week
5. Be sure to test the water as often as possible and add the proper chemicals as needed
6. Your pool’s deck (if you have one) should be clear of debris to avoid accidents

While this list if by no means comprehensive, it can be a good starting point for you. For more information about cleaning your pool and above ground pools in general, call Ambassador Pools today.

Test Kits and Balancing pH for Above Ground Pools – Ogunquit, ME

Literally meaning “beautiful place by the sea,” Ogunquit is a town in York County, Maine with a population of about 1,500. It is a summer resort place that’s part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area.

The climate in the area is classified as humid continental, meaning winters are cold, with summers being hot and often humid. As a resort town, you can safely assume that many residents like to cool off from the summer heat by swimming. However, not everyone has the time to go to the beach, with others not caring for salt water. These are the ones who have their own pools in their homes.

Being more practical and affordable than inground pools, above ground pools are the popular choice of many. But while easier to maintain, every once in awhile an above ground pool has to be tested and it’s pH level balanced.

Chlorine is added in a pool to protect it from algae and kill germs from living in it. It also keeps the water clean and clear. When using a test kit, be sure to get water from below the surface to get a more accurate reading, always at the same time of day.

When the water has been tested, refer to the chart in your testing kit to indicate your pool’s water pH balance. Ideally, the pH level should be between 7.2 and 7.6 Anything above 7.6 and deposits can form in the piping and pool surface.

If the level is lower, the water becomes acidic and it can damage the piping and pool surface. By keeping the pH level within the ideal range, you disinfect the pool properly while keeping any scales from forming, and prevent corrosion.

To find out more about test kits and your pool’s pH balance, call Ambassador Pools today. Not only the finest above ground pool providers in the area, Ambassador Pools can help you with all your pool-related problems.

Solutions for Eye And Skin Irritation in Above Ground Pools - Ocean Park, ME

An unincorporated community in York County, Maine, Ocean Park is also known as Temple Square or Chatauqua-By-The-Sea. It is an historic family-style summer community located in Temple Avenue on Saco Bay and was mainly constructed in the 1880s.

Being a seaside community, residents in the area love the water. Especially when the days get warm in summer, locals would rather take a swim to cool off than sit around in an air conditioned room. While the ocean may be close, many would rather take a dip in the privacy of their own home, which makes above ground pools especially popular.

More practical and affordable than inground pools, above ground pools tend to be a popular alternative choice for many would-be pool owners. However, like any other pool, there are times when eye and skin irritation occurs due to the chlorine.

High levels of chlorine are the chief cause for eye and skin irritation and the reasons may be because of too little free available chlorine or an incorrect pH balance. If this happens, you can do the following.

First, you can check the pH and alkalinity levels of the pool and adjust it accordingly. Or, you can shock the pool using shock treatment chemicals. When you shock the pool, you’ll have to check the pH and alkalinity again after a few hours and readjust. Take note that chlorine levels should be between the 1 – 4 ppm range.

Don’t let eye and skin irritation ruin your pool for you. If you need help in handling above ground pool problems, feel free to call Ambassador Pools. The leading provider of above ground pools, Ambassador Pools can also assist you with maintenance and offer solutions for common pool problems.

Dealing With Birds Around Your Above Ground Pool – Waterboro, ME

Waterboro is a town in York County, Maine with a population of about 7,693. It is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area and includes the North, South, and East districts.

Early Indian settlers called the place Massabesic, which means ‘place of much water’ because of the number of lakes in the region. As such, locals in the area are fond of swimming to cool off in the summer. Today, people are more busy than ever, thus traveling to the nearest swimming hole isn’t as feasible as it once was. Because of this, many install above ground pools in their homes to have easy access to a place they can cool off in, anytime.

While the maintenance of pools have lots of factors to consider, one of the more irritating issues a pool owner has to face are birds. Birds flying around tend to leave droppings everywhere, and that includes your pool’s water. And with the threat of bird flu, making sure your pool is free from any bird contaminants is all the more important. While chlorine can kill off most bacteria and are sufficient enough to handle bird droppings, sometimes it’s not enough.

Here are some things you can do to chase away birds.

You can install a dummy own with a movable head near your pool to chase away birds. Make sure you move the owl figure every couple of days to keep other birds from nesting in a particular area.

Old CDs can also be hung from trees and other outcroppings. The reflected light keeps birds away.

Toy rubber snakes can also be placed in the pool. It also doubles as a pool toy for kids.

You can also place a weaved grid of fishing line over the pool, but make sure it is out of reach of kids.

Finally, always cover your pool when it is not in use.

These are but a few solutions to keep birds away, and I’m sure you can come up a few yourself now that you get the idea. All it takes is a little creativity and trying to think like the birds do.

Fixing Your Above Ground Pool’s Algae Problem – North Berwick, ME

Named after the Berwick in England, North Berwick is a town in York County, Maine with a population of about 5,000. Part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area, North Berwick was first settled in 1693 and incorporated in 1831.

When summer in North Berwick hits, the days get hot enough to merit a swim in a pool. While public pools can be used, not everyone has the time nor money to travel all the way to a public pool to cool off. This is why above ground pools are rising in popularity. Being more affordable and easier to maintain than inground pools, it’s no surprise that a number of residents in North Berwick own, or are planning to own, an above ground pool of their own.

Despite being easier to maintain, above ground pools still require maintenance. This includes shock and algaecide to control the growth of algae. However, there are times when algae still finds its way to your pool. What do you do then?

To treat the algae in your pool, first adjust the pH to about 7.2 to 7.4. Then, you brush the pool walls thoroughly. Use a shock treatment solution, followed by an algae-treatment formula. You then run the filter for a day or two, all while frequently brushing and vacuuming.

If after the steps above, algae is still present, call Ambassador Pools. Aside from being the best above ground pool provider in the area, Ambassador Pools also have their own pool experts to help you maintain your pool.

Dealing With The Chlorine Smell of Your Above Ground Pool in Newfield, ME

Newfield is a town in York County, Maine. Known for being the home of the Willowbrook Museum Village, Newfield has a population of about 1,500 and is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area.

Summers in Newfield can be uncomfortably hot, and swimming is one of the more popular ways to cool off. However, not everyone has the time nor means to visit the local local swimming hole, so many opt instead to have one in their own backyard in the form of an above ground pool.

One of the things above ground pool owners have to deal with though is the chlorine smell. While not really that offensive, it can still cause others to become uncomfortable. So, how do you deal with it?

While some might think that the smell of chlorine means that the pool is properly disinfected, strangely enough, if you smell the chlorine it means that the pool hasn’t got enough of it. The smell actually comes from chloramines, which are formed when there is not enough levels of free chlorine to react with ammonia and nitrogen-containing compounds.

To make sure this is the case, you can measure the level of free and total chlorine using the following formula:

Combined chlorine = total chlorine - free chlorine

When there is very little or no free available chlorine, you can deal with this with a chlorine shock treatment or the use of a pool water sanitizer.

To find out more above combined chlorine and how to deal with it properly, call Ambassador Pools. while being one of the leading above ground pool providers in the area, Ambassador Pools can help you with all your pool related issues.

Scale Deposits in Your Above Ground Pool in Wells, ME

A popular summer destination for tourists, Wells in York County, Maine is also the third-oldest town in the state. With a population of nearly 10,000, the town is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area and has a total area of 73.61 square miles.

While Wells Beach is a popular spot during the summer, there are some residents who want a place all for themselves to cool off in. Which is why above ground pools in the area have become quite popular. More affordable, more practical, and definitely more easy to maintain than inground pools, many residents in and around Wells are intrigued with the prospect of owning one, if they don’t already.

For those who own one, have you ever wondered why sometimes there are white, gray, or brownish chalky deposits on your pool’s walls and fixtures? These are called scale deposits and they happen regularly.

Scale deposits are the precipitates that form due to unbalanced water. Whether its a high pH, high TA, calcium hardness, or a combination of the three, scale deposits happen. While the pH, calcium hardness, and TA are easily controlled and stabilized by a few treatments, when left for a little while, scale deposits can occur.

Fortunately, these are easily taken care of with a simple call to Ambassador Pools. A pool expert can come in to do a full analysis, and based on his or her findings, you will need to balance your water to ensure the scale deposits are controlled.

So if you are experiencing scale deposits in your pool, call Ambassador Pools today. Ambassador Pools aren’t just purveyors of quality above ground pools, but they can help you with your existing one as well.

Dealing With Colored Water in Your Limington, ME Above Ground Pool

A town in York County, Maine, Limington is a popular tourist destination with historic architecture. Part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area, Limington has a population of about 3,800 with an area of 43.29 square miles.

A few hours drive away form the sea, many residents in Limington often visit the sea to cool off when the weather gets hot. But since not everyone has the time to spare to go to the beach, many residents instead opt to get their own above ground pool.

While above ground pools are easier to maintain than inground pools – and more affordable – the fact remains that maintenance is still required. But despite your maintenance, sometimes the water still changes color. So how do you deal with colored water in your above ground pool?

There are two causes for colored water in a pool: dissolved metals or a high organic content. If you have colored water, you can do the following to make it crystal clear again:

1. Bring a sample of the pool water to Ambassador Pools to have it analyzed
2. If the results show dissolved metals, you can add a sequestering agent or metal control to the pool. Be sure to follow the dealer’s instructions.
3. If the analysis yields high organic content, you can shock treat your pool with the proper chemicals. Ask your dealer which chemicals to use and again, follow their instructions.

Simple as that, you can turn your colored water pool back to its crystal clear glory. BE sure to ask Ambassador Pools for advice if you are not sure about the treatment.

After treatment, make sure the free chlorine level drops down to 1 to 4 ppm before you enter the pool.

For more information about proper above ground pool maintenance, feel free to call Ambassador Pools. Whatever your above ground pool needs are, you can trust Ambassador Pools to help you out.

Can You Overstabilize Above Ground Pools? – Limerick, ME

Part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area, Limerick in York County, Maine has a population of about 3,000 and was named after Limerick in Ireland.

Limerick is set among hills and lakes, and many residents who feel hot, especially during summer, have no qualms taking a dip to cool off. However, not everyone has easy access to a swimming hole, so many have invested on an above ground pool instead.

Above ground pools are a more affordable, more practical, and easier to maintain alternative to inground pools. Both serving the same function, it’s no surprise why above ground pools are growing in popularity.

If you are an above ground pool owner, you’ve no doubt spent some time stabilizing your pool as part of your maintenance routine. However, is it possible to over stabilize it? The answer is yes.

When stabilized sanitizers and stabilized shock products are used too often, there will be a build-up of cyanuric acid which is the chief sign of over stabilization. This is a concern because an over stabilized pool will lessen the effectiveness of chlorine in killing germs, algae, and bacteria. While cyanauric acid in small levels protect chlorine from deteriorating under sunlight, too much will render the benefits of chlorine useless and can cause more problems. Recommended levels of cyanauric acid are from 40 to 60 ppm.

If you are concerned about pool stabilization, and need help in the proper maintenance of your pool, feel free to contact Ambassador Pools. The premiere provider of above ground pools in the area, Ambassador Pools can help you in all above ground pool related things, whether you are a prospective buyer or an experienced owner.

Cloudy Water in Your Lebanon, ME Above Ground Pool

A town in York County, Maine, Lebanon is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area and has a population of about 6,000.

Summers in Lebanon can be hot and perfect for swimming. Instead of taking the trip out to local swimming holes, many residents have their own above ground pools for easier access to the water. Why above ground pools? Aside from being more affordable than inground pools, above ground pools are more practical and easier to maintain, making them the smarter choice.

For those who own an above ground pool, keeping the water clean is important for your health and for the overall maintenance of the pool. So, what do you do if you have cloudy water?

While the causes for cloudy water are numerous, it is usually due to an incorrect pH, incorrect TA or improper filtration. After making sure the pH and TA are the right level, check your filtration system and adjust it accordingly.

Be sure that the filtration system runs smoothly and that it is turned on at least 8 to 12 hours a day. Also check if the filter needs to be backwashed. After backwashing, check if the filter pressure normalizes, if not, it might need to be cleaned chemically.

Be sure that the pump strainer baskets and skimmer baskets are emptied, and test your water's pH and alkalinity levels to see if they are in the ideal range. You can also shock the pool using the proper chemicals.

If you need help in acquiring the chemicals needed, call Ambassador Pools for help. Aside from providing the best above ground pools in the market, Ambassador Pools can also help in maintaining them.

Owning an above ground pool can be fun, and if maintained properly, it can give you years of service and comfort. For more information, call Ambassador Pools today.

Kittery Point, ME Above Ground Pool FAQ – Free Available Chlorine

A census-designated place in York County, Maine, Kittery Point is part of the town of Kittery and has a population of about 1,100. Located just beside the Atlantic Ocean, Kittery Point is also part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area.

With its proximity to the ocean, it comes as no surprise that most Kittery Point residents have a love affair with the water. When the weather gets too hot, many would rather cool off by swimming than just sit in an air conditioned room. Because of this, many residents have their own above ground pool to cool off in anytime they want.

While significantly easier to maintain than inground pools, above ground pools still needs a degree of maintenance to keep them safe and healthy. One of the more frequently asked questions by above ground pool owners though is with regards to proper pool chlorination. Specifically, Free Available Chlorine or FAC.

First off, what is FAC? In a nutshell, it is the amount of active chlorinator in the water. What a chlorinator does is kill bacteria, control algae, and eliminate organic contaminants to achieve healthy pool water.

The correct amount of FAC in a pool should be in the 1.0 – 4.0 ppm range. If the level is below 1.0 ppm, algae problems, cloudy water, swimmer rashes, and bacteria problems can occur. To raise the ppm, chlorinator should be added or shock treatment done until the desired FAC level is achieved.

To ensure proper FAC levels, above ground pool owners should test the water at least twice a week during the summer season, though daily is best.

To find out more about FAC and above ground pool maintenance, feel free to contact Ambassador Pools and its pool experts. Whether you are an above ground pool owner, or planning to become one,  Ambassador Pools can help you with all your above ground pool needs.

Above Ground Pool Water Chemistry – Kittery, ME

A town in York County, Maine, Kittery is a tourist destination that’s known for its many outlet stores. With a population of around 9,500, the town is also home to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Kittery is also part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area.

The town is built around a natural harbor, which makes many of its residents quite fond of the water. When the days get hot, swimming is the most popular way to cool off. While many residents have their own above ground pool, with many more planning to get one, pool owners should be aware of proper pool water chemistry.

When pool water is balanced, pool maintenance becomes easy.

Alkalinity must be tested once a month with the range being 125-150 ppm. Calcium hardness should be tested bi-monthly and should be in the range of 175-225 ppm. Finally, pH should be checked twice a week with a range of 7.2-7.6.

If the levels of the above are correct, the levels needed to fight bacteria are correct, corrosive build up will be prevented, and eye irritation won’t be as rampant too.

If the levels tested are too high or too low the accepted range, you can add the proper chemicals to bring it to the right levels. If pH is high or low, you can add a pH Minus or pH Plus product respectively. If calcium is low, you add a water hardener agent; but if it’s high, a sequestering agent it needed. For alkalinity, if the levels are too high, an Alkalinity Decreaser should be used, and if it’s too low, an Alkalinity Increaser should be added.

It’s all pretty straightforward, but if you need help with your above ground pool’s water balance, feel free to call Ambassador Pools – the best above ground pool provider in the area doesn’t just help you get your own pool, they can also help you maintain it.

What Are TDS’s in Above Ground Pools? – Kennebunkport, ME

A town in York County, Maine with a population of about 3,500, Kennebunkport is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area. It is known as one of the wealthiest communities in the state and has a reputation for being the summer haven for the rich.

While the town has been a seaside tourist spot for over a century, not everyone who lives in Kennebunkport has the means to visit the sea everyday. While this may not be a real problem, once the weather gets hot and the urge to cool off by taking a swim takes hold, it can be.

To deal with this, many residents get an above ground pool to ensure a swimming pool is easily accessible, anytime. Growing in popularity due to its advantages over inground pools, above ground pools have proven to be practical and efficient.

Of course, maintenance is still required, though not as much as with inground pools. Nevertheless, if you deal with the maintenance of above ground pools, no doubt you’ve come across the term ‘TDS.’ But what are TDS’s anyway?

TDS stands for total dissolved solids, and it is the measure of the overall dissolved material in a pool. TDS levels are caused by many factors, including the chemicals used to adjust the pH, water hardness, alkalinity, dust, and even human waste.

The maximum acceptable level TDS is any pool is about 1,500 ppm. When the level goes any higher, stains may begin to become noticeable in the pool. The effectiveness of the chemicals you add will be limited because of it, and the water will get cloudy.

Once TDS levels reach very high levels, there’s not much you can do. The best practical solution is to drain some or all the water depending on the TDS level and replace it with fresh water with low TDS.

To minimize the rise of TDS, a regular backwashing routine could help.

To learn more about handling TDS, and about above ground pools in general, call Ambassador Pools. The finest above ground pool provider in the area, all your questions regarding its maintenance, repair, and purchase will be addressed by its pool experts.

Energy Saving Tips For Your Above Ground Pool – Kennebunk, ME

A town in York County, Maine, Kennebunk is home to several beaches and has a population of nearly 11,000. First settled in 1621, it was incorporated as a town in 1820. Today, it is a thriving industrial community and is known for its 1,500 acres of nature trails and blueberry fields.

While Kennebunk has its own beaches, not all residents can head on down to one and cool off when the weather gets hot. This is why many have their own above ground pool. Owning one is much more practical and efficient compared to owning an inground pool, and to further save you money, here are some energy saving tips you might want to consider.

One of the best investments you can make is a pool cover. If you heat your pool, it can net you 50 to 70 percent energy savings. If not, it helps in keeping debris and leaves off it while minimizing pool water evaporation. A good pool cover can last several years, and they are usually made of plastic or aluminum.

If you have a heater, it is wise to invest in a timer. A heater in use can overheat in time, especially when water is not circulating through it, so be sure the pump is one when you turn on the heater. A timer can help ease operation as well as shut it down after a given time to cool down the system.

Still on pool heating, if you haven’t installed one yet, solar heating can be quite the money saver. While it may initially cost more than traditional gas, oil, or electric heaters, once installed, a solar heater provides virtually free heat.

There are several different kinds of solar heaters so be sure to research the best option for your pool first.

To learn more about saving energy with your above ground pool, call the pool experts at Ambassador Pools. Whether you need help with your existing pool, or are interested in getting one, Ambassador Pools can surely help.

A properly heated pool can have you enjoying your pool for more hours, days of the year, and in some cases, even the whole year round. So let’s look at the facts of heating an above ground pool.

Why Choose an Above Ground Pool in Eliot, Maine?

Part of the Maine metropolitan statistical area, Eliot is a town in York County. It is home to Littlebrook Airpark and the Raitt Homestead Farm Museum. Eliot is located just northwest of I-95, near the border of New Hampshire, and has a population of about 6,300.

Maine has one of the most comfortable summer climates in the country, and to make it more comfortable, many residents spend their free days lounging in the water. While the beaches of Maine are popular destinations, not everyone can visit the beach any time they want, thus the prospect of owning their own pool is an attractive one.

If you are one of those planning to get a pool, you’ve no doubt wrestled with the choice between an inground pool or an above ground one. While inground pools are nice, above ground pools can be better. Here’s why:

Above ground pools are much more affordable. Given the high costs of installing and maintaining an inground pool, many pool owners have opted to go for above ground pools due to the lower costs they incur. Aside from saving you money, an above ground pool also saves your property from being permanently scarred, thus keeping its value.

As for maintenance, while above ground pools still require it regularly, the amount of time and effort you’d need to put into it is minimal compared to inground pools.

Easily set up and dismantled, if ever you decide to move homes in the near future, you can have your above ground pool taken down and reinstalled to wherever you are moving to next. What this means is, even if you move homes, you get to bring your pool investment with you. Something that even the finest inground pools can’t do.

If you are pressed for space, inground pools may not be an option, which makes above ground pools perfect. Available in various shapes and sizes, no matter how large or little a space you can manage, there is an above ground pool for you.

There are many more reasons why above ground pools are the better pool investment, and the above are but the tip of the iceberg. If you want to learn more about above ground pools, feel free to call Ambassador Pools for more information.

Sanitizing Your Above Ground Pool – Eliot, ME

With a population of about 6,200, Eliot is a town in York County, Maine. Part of the Maine metropolitan statistical area, it is home to Littlebrook Airpark and the Raitt Homestead Farm Museum.

Homeowners know how precious it is to have the time to relax. Especially when it’s the middle of summer, many would rather lounge in a pool. But not everyone can visit the local swimming hole, which makes above ground swimming pools a popular choice.

For those who plan to, or already, own an above ground pool, it is important to know how to keep it clean. After all, if you intend to spend a lot of time in your pool, won’t you like it to have clean water?

Pool cleaning is usually done through the use of antibacterial chemicals. These can be done through chlorine, baquacil, or other methods such as salt water generators. Whichever method is used, healthy levels must be maintained to ensure continued sanitization.

The most common method though, is through chlorination. Chlorine levels for proper sanitation is usually kept from 1.0 - 3.0 ppm. Chlorine can be added via tablets, sticks, granules, and floaters.

Using floats, these are used via the filtering system or you can add it directly as well. No matter what method you use, how you use it, the important thing is to keep the proper levels to make sure the pool stays clean and clear.

Adding Chlorine to Your Above Ground Pool in Cornish, ME

A town in York County, Maine, Cornish has a population of about 1,400 and is part of the Maine metropolitan statistical area. What started out as a trading post in 1665, Cornish has grown to a town that borders the towns of Hiram, Baldwin, Limington, Limerick, and Parsonsfield.

Like all the other towns and cities near it, Cornish tends to have hot and humid summers. On days like these, locals would much rather spend time in their own pool to cool off.

For those who already own a pool, you might have considered adding chlorine to it. If the alkalinity and pH levels of your pool are correct, you can add chlorine, though this depends on the present chlorine levels and the type used.

Why add chlorine? Because UV light degrades chlorine rapidly, and if your pool is lacking in it, you might consider adding more. Take note that because of the effects of UV light, chlorine should only be added in the late afternoon or early evening so that the sun won’t affect the mix.

Sufficient pool cleanliness can be attained by keeping chlorine levels at 1.0-3.0 ppm. However, if you find your pool having large quantities of chlorine, or if you notice a strong smell around the pool, you might need to shock treat the water.

Shock treating involves adding huge amounts of non-stabilized chlorine or non-chlorine oxidizers to the pool.

If you need more help regarding your above ground pool, feel free to call Ambassador Pools and consult with their experts. Above ground pools are a great investment, and whether you own one already or are just planning to get one, it’s recommended you consult with an expert from Ambassador Pools.

Having two beaches on either side of the peninsula where it sits, Cape Neddick locals have a thing for swimming, especially when the weather gets hot.

Controlling Algae in Your Cape Porpoise, ME Above Ground Pool

A small coastal village in Maine, Cape Porpoise was the original English settlement of the town of Kennebunkport and its deep natural harbor is protected by more than a dozen islands. The sea is part of the village’s history, and as such, many residents prefer to cool off during hot days by taking a swim.

But not everyone has the time nor inclination to cool off in salty water, which makes above ground pools a popular alternative. Besides being more affordable than inground pools, above ground pools are also more practical, efficient, and easier to maintain.

One of the more common problems of taking care of your above ground pool is algae. Tiny plants that thrive in water and can grow in a short time, algae forms when there is enough sunshine and food. To control it, the secret is in its environment.

The three kinds of algae found in pool water are:
  • Green Algae - dusty green in color, this type floats in the water and on the sides of the pool.
  • Yellow Algae - mustard in color, these appear as yellow powder deposits on the shady sides of a pool
  • Black Algae - can appear blue-green in color, this type appears as an inch sized spot on the surface of the pool
To prevent the growth of algae, proper chlorination levels must be maintained in your pool. However, once algae forms despite proper chlorination, normal chlorine level may not control it. To get rid of it, the water must be treated with 30 PPM of Free Chlorine to kill the algae and eliminate the organic waste that’s left behind. Make sure your pump, filter and chlorinator works properly, then run the pump for 24 hours non-stop. Sweep thoroughly afterwards, and ensure that no one uses the pool until the water is clear and chemical levels are back to normal.

If you have an algae problem that you can’t control, call Ambassador pools to find out how to properly deal with it, or ask them to send in a professional pool cleaner to help out.

5 Benefits of Above Ground Pools – Biddeford, ME

Biddeford is the sixth-largest city in Maine with a population of about 21,300. First settled by Europeans in 1616, it is one of the earliest European settlements in the country. Lying in the humid continental climate zone, you can expect winters to be cold, while summers are hot and humid.

Unsurprisingly, when summer hits, many Biddeford residents want to cool themselves off as often as possible. To achieve this, many look to having their own pool. The choice between getting an inground one or an above ground pool is a personal one, but nevertheless, here are 5 benefits of an above ground pool you might want to consider:

Cost

While inground pools can cost tens of thousands of dollars, above ground pools cost a much lower price.

Installation

Installing an inground pool can take a month or so. Compare that to above ground pools, which can take only a day or so to install, and you would understand why many prefer eliminating wait times by choosing above ground pools .

Space Management

Some inground pool sizes start at 17 feet in diameter. If you don’t have space for that, then above ground pools are your only option since they come in various shapes and sizes. You can easily choose an above ground pool that fits your allocated space accordingly.

Moving?

If you plan to transfer your inground pool from your old home to a new one, it would involve tearing things down that would affect the entire property's value. But with above ground pools, all it takes is dismantling and having it reinstalled to wherever you plan to move to next.

Maintenance

Maintaining and cleaning above ground pools is easier than inground pools since you won’t have to deal with hidden parts. Above ground pools have easily accessible parts that would make maintenance a breeze.

To learn more about above ground pools, or if you plan on getting one soon, call Ambassador Pools today. One of the finest pool providers in the area, Ambassador Pools can help you with all your above ground pool needs anytime.

Landscaping Around Your Berwick, ME Above Ground Pool

A town in York County, Maine, Berwick is located beside the Salmon Falls River. With a population of about 7,300, the town was once called Kittery Commons, then Unity. It was changed to Berwick in 1713.

Two rivers drain Berwick, Little River and Salmon Falls River, and as such, locals have a love affair of sorts with water. Being a central part of everyday life, when days become warm, it’s only natural that many cool off by taking a swim.

Today, many opt to have a pool of their own and above ground pools have proven to be a popular choice given their practicality, affordability, and overall efficiency. But sometimes, having a pool stick out in the middle of the yard can be an eyesore. It's a good thing landscaping around your above ground pool is not out of the question.

Landscaping around your pool is more than just an aesthetic decision though, and it can also serve a practical purpose by absorbing the water that splashes from the pool, preventing a muddy mess. Here’s how you can prepare the ground:

- Dig a soil barrier about 3 feet from the pool’s wall. Remove the rocks, grass, and weeds in this strip of soil.
- About 2 inches from the pool wall, dig a slit trench about 18 inches deep. Take a sheet of metal root barrier and hammer it into the slit. This is to prevent plant roots from growing under the pool.
- You can then plant bushes around the pool. It’s best to choose perennial plants and those that don’t drop leaves or flowers to minimize debris.
- Use rocks to cover the ground on the edge of the soil barrier to prevent weeds and grass from growing back. This will also allow splashed water to drain to the bushes and plants you’ve planted.

Remember, leave the area around the ladder of your pool free. You can use stones to create a walkway to the ladder though, to add a dash of class.

It's a small wonder then why many Buxton residents prefer to cool off during hot days by taking a dip. However, not everyone can visit the nearest swimming hole everyday, which makes the prospect of owning a pool all the more attractive.

Inground pools can be expensive and take time to install; above ground pools, on the other hand, are more affordable and take only a day or so of setting up before you can use them. Need an Above Ground Pool in Alfred, Maine?

A town in York County, Maine, Alfred is known as the home of part of the Massabesic Experimental Forest. The town is drained by the Mousam River, Littlefield River, Hay Brook, and Trafton Brook. With all the rivers and brooks in it, it's not hard to guess that the town's residents have a love for the water.

When the heat gets unbearable, or when the stress just gnaws away, locals would rather cool off and relax by taking a dip. But not everyone can visit the nearest swimming hole anytime they like, which makes owning an above ground pool all the more attractive.

Above ground pools are gaining in popularity these days and it's not hard to see why. More affordable, practical, easier to maintain, and customizable, above ground pools offer the same as inground pools, but with more benefits.

Consider this, above ground pools cost less to install and even less to maintain than inground pools. What's more, being tax-free, you don't have to pay yearly taxes on above ground pools. The overall costs alone favor above ground pools over inground ones.

Above Ground Pool Placement Tips in Acton, Maine

Acton, Maine – a suburban town in Middlesex County, it lies 21 miles west-northwest of Boston and has a population of about 22,000. One of the wealthiest towns in the country, Acton has a rich and full history that dates back to the time of the first Indians 7,000 years ago.

With two primary stream systems, water plays a huge part in the lives of Acton's residents, which makes it natural for locals to seek out water when they want to cool off.

One of the more popular pool choices these days are above ground pools, and it's easy to see why since above ground pools are more practical, more affordable, and highly customizable.

If you plan on getting one, or already bought one but haven't decided where to place it yet, here are some things to consider regarding pool placement.

Sunny areas - keep your pool warm and minimize the amount of leaves and debris that can clutter your pool.

Wind breaks - wind can hasten evaporation, so consider the placement of trees, fences and other wind breakers to lower heat loss in your pool.

Entryway - be aware of your pool's accessibility, and take into account the patios, walkways and deck you may want to add.

Equipment shed - many opt to build a small shed where their pool equipment can be placed. Aside from protecting the equipment, it can also be made to become an attractive addition to your landscaping. Also, it's better to have the shed close to the pool rather than far away.

There are other factors to consider, of course, but these are the basics that you may want to think about when deciding where to place your pool.

If you need more information about above ground pools, or need help regarding its placement, feel free to call Ambassador Pools today!

What the Law Says About Above Ground Pools in Tewksbury, MA

First settled in 1637, Tewksbury is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts with a population of about 30,000. It is situated about 19 miles north-northwest of Boston and has the Merrimack River forming part of its northern boundary.

Summers in the area can be hot and humid, which makes above ground pools an attractive addition to anyone's home. Aside from being more affordable than inground pools, above ground pools are more practical and easier to maintain, too.

But what does the law say about owning above ground pools?

First off, there is a law that requires covers on in-pool filtration systems. This is to prevent swimmers, especially children, from getting injured when the pool filter's suction gets hold of them.

While most pool laws differ from state to state, some of the other common laws require having a pool fence erected to keep children out when not in use. Usually, these same laws include a provision requiring gates to be locked when an adult is not present.

Of course, there are construction laws and codes to follow when installing a pool, and it's wise to follow these to the T. The laws often require the proper installation of pool lighting and other special electrical components to avoid electrocution. Always have a professional electrician install these up to code.

West Newbury, MA Above Ground Pool Facts

Situated on the Merrimack River, West Newbury in Essex County, Massachusetts has a population of about 4,300. It was first settled in 1635, turning into a rural farming town until it evolved into the affluent community it is today.

Many West Newbury residents love the water, and as such, when the weather gets hot enough, they look to cool off by taking a swim. Since not everyone can visit the nearest watering hole everyday, many look to buy an above ground pool, instead, for easy access to some water.

If you are planning to buy an above ground pool, here are some facts to consider:

Since a pool requires a lot of water, and must be replenished from time to time, make sure you install your pool near a water source so you can easily top off the water level whenever needed.

While many think they can set up an above ground pool by themselves, it's best to call in a professional to ensure that the installation is done correctly - from ensuring that the ground is level, to putting the right substrate underneath the pool. Some excavation and landscaping may be needed, as well as other heavy duty lifting. In other words, get professional help.

Also, be sure to take into account that your pool will require proper maintenance, which means long-term costs. The good news though is that maintaining an above ground pool is more affordable than maintaining an inground one.

While owning an above ground pool requires dedication, time, and money, it is all worth it. Besides, it is still significantly easier to own an above ground pool than an inground one, so you will still be ahead.

Finding a Leak in Your Wenham, MA Above Ground Pool

Originally settled in 1635, Wenham in Essex County, Massachusetts has been listed by Boston magazine as one of the Best Places to Live. With open views of farm lands, lakes, woodland, historic homes, and nearly 300 acres of parks and playgrounds, it's easy to see why.

But when the weather gets hot, the best way to make living in Wenham even better is to have an above ground pool installed. Many residents have one already, and if you're on the fence on buying one, time to take the plunge. You're in good company.

However, every once in awhile, a leak may spring up in or around your above ground pool, and locating it can be an exercise in futility if you don't know what you are doing. Here are some tips to help you locate that leak in your swimming pool.

First, confirm that you have a leak. Mark your pool's level and after 24 hours, double check it. You shouldn't lose more than ¼ inch a day. If you lose more, a leak is involved.

To find the leak, it's best to check the obvious culprits first. Check the equipment pad, the filter, pump, heater and pipe valves. These have moving parts and are more prone to wear and tear.

Check the area around the pool and take note where the wet areas are. Chances are the leaks are close by.

If you have a vinyl liner pool, check for tears, and separations.

If you can't find the leak, call Ambassador Pools and have an expert pool repairman come to your home. If you do find the leak, it's best to still call a repairman to help you fix it. While you may be adept at fixing leaks, an above ground pool is a different beast altogether, and repairing a leak requires expert knowledge.

While a leak may be irritating, having it repaired only takes a short while before it's good as new. When in doubt, always call a professional to avoid worsening the situation. Call Ambassador Pools today if you feel your pool has a leak!
