Swimming at Night in an Above Ground Pool

There is nothing quite like taking a dip in your backyard on-ground swimming pool on a hot summer night. However, there are some things that you should think about before you step foot in the water. You want to be safe, and you want to be sure that you, your family, and any guests to your home are able to swim without any kind of danger.

To prevent any problems with people not being able to see in the dark, it is suggested that you get pool lighting installed. There are a number of different options available to you when it comes to choosing the best lighting for your above ground pool.

Types of Lighting Available

Overhanging Lights

These are the most traditional option. They involve having a light kit hanging over the top lip of the pool. They involve installing a light attached to a plastic arm where wires will go down the bulb. These are used mostly in pools that do not have any kind of deck installed. These are likely the most affordable option.

Through-Wall Lights

These lights look more "professional," and they don't stick out of the sides of the above ground pool. They don't interfere with swimming by getting in the way. For installation, they will need to be mounted properly to prevent problems with leaks. They must be installed through the structural walls of the pool and the liner itself.

Floating Lights

These are used in both in-ground and on-ground pool varieties. They do not need to penetrate any walls or liners for installation, and they can be purchased in battery-powered varieties. This means that you also do not need to worry about any unattractive or dangerous wires running to your pool.

Magnetic Lights

These are attached to the sides of the pool. This is also a style that does need to penetrate the walls of the pool or the liner for proper installation. Another benefit of this variety is the fact that the light can be moved to wherever you want.

Above Ground Pools vs In-Ground Pools

Sure, the weather outside right now isn't making you think about taking a dip in a brand new pool, but once the dog days of summer get here, you and the family are going to want a place to cool off. What better way to do so than from the comfort of your own backyard with a swimming pool?

Ambassador Pools is a leading above ground pool provider in the New England area, including in Massachusetts where they are headquartered. We wanted to give you a few points to think about when it comes to making a pool purchase. Should you go with in-ground or above ground? What is the best value? What makes the most sense for your family's needs? Read on to learn more.

COST

This is likely the first thing that you want to know about. How much is it going to cost? Generally speaking, an in-ground pool, regardless of whether it is vinyl, concrete, or fiberglass is going to cost around $30-70,000. This is a wide range, definitely, but it is a true estimate of how much the job is going to cost you.

You may have seen popular TV commercials or kits sold at your local home improvement store that say that you can have an in-ground pool installed for less than $15,000. This is nowhere close to being accurate. Sure, maybe the cost of labor will be this much, but this total does not include: the shell of the pool, the excavation and ground leveling work that will be needed, the pool deck that will need to be added around the water, the accessories you want, lighting, electrical hookup, and the fence that will be required around the pool if you live in an area where it's in the city code.

When purchasing an above ground pool, the costs are much less. You can get the entire pool set up, pool deck and accessories included, for MUCH less than $30,000! This is good news for any homeowner working with a budget, which let's face it, that's all of us! Also, when you get an above ground swimming pool installed, you won't need to worry about getting a special fence installed, and you won't have to pay any yearly taxes on it as is the case with the in-ground variety.

MAINTENANCE

When comparing the two types of pools, in-ground pools require a lot of chemicals to be sure that the water stays clean and healthy for your family to swim in. Also, if there is a crack in the walls or floor of the pool, it can be difficult (and expensive) to have repaired, especially if the shell is made from concrete. With an above ground pool from Ambassador Pools, you get a practically maintenance-free pool. That is just how they are designed! It is recommended that you make sure that the filter is kept clean, and be sure that you also skim across the top of the water to remove any leaves, twigs, seed pods, or so on which may have gotten into the water between uses.

SIZE

Both types of pools are available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. However, with above ground pools from us, you have the ability to get a versatile rectangular pool installed which will fit perfectly in the space allotted for it in your backyard. These pools are great for swimming laps and getting your exercise. They are also perfect for all types of water sports and games, including water volleyball.

LONGEVITY

Typically speaking, the average above ground pool will last for around 15 years with proper care and upkeep. The liner in the pool will last for about 5-9 years before it is going to need to be replaced. An in-ground pool's lifespan will vary depending on what type of material the shell is made out of. For most fiberglass pools, they should last for about 20 years. Vinyl pools will last for about that long, as well, but their liners will need to be replaced often. And concrete pools will last for a long time, but they are the most difficult to maintain because they can easily crack and chip.

CONCLUSION

As you can easily see, an above ground pool is a great choice if you are a family in New England wanting to get a swimming pool for your family for the upcoming spring and summer months. How to Shop for an Above Ground Swimming Pool

The first question most folks ask us is "what is a cost of a swimming pool"?  The price of purchasing an above ground pool can range from $500 to $45,000.

Unfortunately, many people run into a road block when they research online as to how much an on-ground or above ground swimming pool really is going to cost. This article will help to make the process of shopping for a pool a bit easier.  We'll try to explain what to look for and what items to avoid.

Choosing the type of Pool:

There are two options when it comes to deciding on what type of pool you may want.  They are:
1. Above Ground Pools
2. In-Ground Pools

Although there are endless options the main things to know about the two main categories are:

1. Above Ground Pools are portable.  You move, you can take your pool.
2. In-Ground pools are a permanent fixed item.  You'll need to consider this and how long you'll be in your home before you determine what suits your needs.

Material for construction:

There are 3 main types of material that most pools are constructed out of including vinyl liner, gunite or concrete and fiberglass.  Each material has benefits and draw backs that need to be considered.  Within the above ground pool category the most common material is a vinyl liner system.  The split between in-ground pools for material is about 50-50 from fiberglass to concrete.

Options:

With any pool design you want to get a professional experienced pool planner to help you think through how you'll be using the pool and all the surrounding area.  Proper planning ensures your family can safely enjoy this backyard space.  Additionally, you'll want to make sure you take time to organize your pool budget so it has enough funds to ensure all local municipal codes are met.

Cost:

For most people a great option to get a lot of pool for the money and still have the ability to relocate the pool an above ground pool is the way to go.  Within the above ground pool market you'll find online hundreds of sizes, shapes, warranties and prices.  Cheap pools like you find in box stores or d-i-y websites typically have a low ball price shown just to get the consumer's interest.  As with most anything, if you buy a low end product you'll be disappointed and probably have to replace the item in a year or so.  With today's new technology many of the above ground pools are so well built they last for a very long time.  These pools also have decks, fencing, pumps and filters all included in a package price.

The cheapo pools from the box stores run from $250-3,000, plus you need to hire someone to install it.  A high end pool such as the Kayak (a rectangular pool) will cost about $15,000 installed with many features.

Gunite Pools with a side spa, finished pebble bottom and a salt filtration system could price tag in the $50,000 - $100,000 area.

Tips of Success:

First, find a pool company who has been in business a long time.  Check their Better Business Bureau rating.  Ask them for references of people who have one of their pools.  Do not even consider buying the pool online to save a few bucks and then have problems with getting it installed, getting warranty work done, etc.  If you call a pool company and they don't offer to send out a consultant to checkout your yard and take the time to help you plan, move on to another firm.

Pools are wonderful and fun.  They allow families to spend time together, to get exercise and to just relax and enjoy each others company.  Be sure that the pool you pick is right for your needs.

A Different, More Practical Swimming Pool in Pittsburgh, PA

A boy in a children's swimming pool.
The second largest city in Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh has been called the 'most livable city' by Places Rated Almanac, Forbes,  and The Economist. It has also been named a top world destination by both National Geographic and Today. But as with most large cities today, de-stressing and relaxation without having to leave the area is getting more difficult.

One of the best ways to relax after a long day or week at work is to lounge in a pool, sipping margaritas. Having an inground pool can be a source of relaxation and makes for great parties, but the costs of installing and maintenance can be prohibitive.

It's a good thing there's a different, more practical swimming pool in Pittsburgh, PA courtesy of Ambassador Pools – above ground swimming pools.

Above ground, or on-ground pools are extremely safe to use. They're also much more affordable both in initial cost and with maintenance. In fact, maintenance is not needed once the pool has been installed. On-ground pools are installed with special double drains and pumps that take care of cleaning the water. No extra cleaning accessories are needed.

Though most above ground pools are circular in shape, there are rectangular pools available, too, if you prefer. These are perfect for swimming laps and for playing water sports such as water polo and water volleyball. Furthermore, no additional special fences are needed like inground pools require.

Before a pool is installed, consultants will make sure you have space to fit the pool in and ensure that the site won't be under power lines or above septic tanks.

Aside form the high costs of inground pools, it also takes forever to have them installed. Often taking a month or even more before you can enjoy it. With on-ground pools, it only takes a day, or 3-5 days if there is a problem with retaining walls to stones. Still, this is a relatively quicker turnaround than with inground pools.

Oh, and if you ever decide to move, above ground pools can be taken down and reinstalled at a different location. Let's see you do that with an in-ground pool!

Last, but not least, above ground pools don't get taxed every year like inground pools do. This reason alone makes above ground pools much more practical.

Pittsburgh residents who are looking for a practical solution for their de-stressing woes, look no further than an above ground pool. It does all an inground pool does, but with more benefits!
